Genesis 26:2 וַיֵּרָא In the absence of a sufformative, the Imperfect preformative י identifies this verb as Imperfect 3ms. It is prefixed with Waw Consecutive. In this form, the Tsere preformative vowel is not diagnostic of the I-י Qal Imperfect. The stem is Niphal and the verbal root is the doubly weak verb רָאָה. The נ of the Niphal stem can not assimilate into the guttural in first root position. This causes the compensatory lengthening of the Hireq preformative vowel to Tsere (25.7.1). Note
